Conference Attendees Speak Out Trends and Issues - Unappreciated and On the Forefront of Technology Innovation
By: Jenny Schuchert, Education Specialist for IAITAM

At the IAITAM Annual Conference this autumn, attendees were asked to answer a practitioner survey that gives a “state of the union” for the professionals conducting the day to day business practices of software and hardware asset management.  Seventy-nine practitioners completed the survey during the conference and the results give an interesting view into the current state and the issues anticipated for 2010.    Intended as a general overview of IT asset management issues and the awareness that these issues include every organization, practitioners were not asked to describe their organizations.   Read More...

By: Rob Horwitz, Research Chair for Directions on Microsoft

Over the next few years, using System Center products to manage large numbers of virtual machines on servers containing more than two processors will get more expensive
Starting July 2009, Microsoft began offering two types of management suite licenses rather than one, the most important difference being the number of virtual machines (VMs) that can be managed. Both System Center Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE) and the new Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD) allow management of server workloads using Operations Manager, Configuration Manager, Data Protection Manager, and Virtual Machine Manager. For past and future customers managing servers with one or two processors, the changes are mostly price-neutral. However, some customers licensing larger servers will see substantial price increases, mostly in the form of rising future Software Assurance (SA) payments.

The Software Compliance Reporting Blues - The Fast and Economical Solution May Be a Hosted Software License Reconciliation Service
By: Ed Cartier, Marketing Director for xAssets US

By now it is no secret that IT asset management solutions and systems that calculate and report an organization’s degree of software license compliance (or lack thereof) are valuable assets to any IT operation. However, let’s be frank here, the economic times ain’t what they used to be. IT budgets have been slashed and programs have been cancelled or postponed across the board. Traditional ITAM and SAM systems have a reputation of being expensive and complex, putting new systems out of the reach of many organizations and companies. So, what are your options if you really need a solution right away?
